Dr David Wilkinson
Founding Headmaster
Dr David Wilkinson's legacy is inextricably linked to the inception and enduring ethos of the Mahindra United World College of India. Relocating to Pune in 1997, Wilkinson took on the monumental task of serving as the college's founding Head. Tasked with breathing academic and communal life into Christopher Charles Benninger's newly minted architectural masterpiece, Wilkinson meticulously cultivated an environment that honoured both the rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum and the United World College mission of peace and cross-cultural understanding. Under his direct leadership, MUWCI established its identity as a premier beacon of global education in South Asia, characterised by a vibrant, international student body and an unyielding commitment to community service and experiential learning.
Before cementing his legacy in India, Wilkinson was already a towering, pioneering figure within the UWC movement. He arrived in Pune having successfully served as the founding Headmaster of the Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong, where he navigated the institution through its crucial, highly successful formative years. His deep expertise in international education was further grounded by his earlier tenure as the Founding Deputy Head of the United World College of the Adriatic in Italy, as well as holding the headship of Machabeng College in Lesotho. Across these remarkably diverse geographic and cultural landscapes, Wilkinson consistently demonstrated an unparalleled ability to build cohesive, globally-minded academic communities from the ground up.
Beyond his vital role as a headmaster, Dr Wilkinson profoundly influenced the structural framework of international education itself. He was instrumental as part of the original team that developed the International Baccalaureate's foundational Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course and served extensively as an IB examiner. His dedication to advancing education on the subcontinent continued long after his headship, notably serving as the Chair of the IB Development Council for India until 2009. Later in his career, alongside his wife Veronica, he transitioned into independent educational consulting, serving as Founder and Chair of the Oaktree Foundation — helping to establish a new IB school in Kolkata — and collaborated closely with the Pestalozzi Overseas Children's Trust to open a scholarship-focused secondary school in Zambia.
